This year is special for Šiauliai. Šiauliai is celebrating its 790th anniversary. Various events and entertainment await residents and visitors year-round. Visit the City of the Sun – congratulate Šiauliai while you enjoy good times and have a wonderful time.
Now imagine: 790 minutes is one delicious, photogenic, and interesting day. You’ll have enough time not only to get to know the city but also to experience it. The City of the Sun knows how to surprise: with records, street art, interactive history, rivers of sweets, and postcard-perfect sunsets.
0–120 minutes. Getting to know the city: pedestrian boulevard and symbols
Start with the heart of the city – the third-oldest boulevard in Europe. This is more than just a street – it’s the pulse of the city. The boulevard stands out with its unique old 3D advertising, cats on the roofs, and other details that just beg to be photographed.
Nearby is Sundial Square, featuring the golden boy (Sagittarius), one of the city’s main symbols. Sagittarius stands atop Lithuania’s tallest sundial—an 18-meter-tall column.
120–220 minutes. Šiauliai from a bird’s eye view: Cathedral tower and city panorama
If you’re looking to be amazed, choose the opportunity to enter the tower of the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city. This tower is one of the tallest in the country. You’ll be treated to more than just a breathtaking view. You’ll also see the carillon, a rarity in churches, and learn about the secrets of the city’s history while listening to a fascinating guide.
220–320 minutes. City as a Gallery: Urban Tattoos
Šiauliai has a superpower: its walls speak. Include at least two or three of these urban tattoos in your itinerary, and your mood will change, and your photos will become Instagrammable. Look, in the city center, Nicolaus Copernicus invites you to look up and see the possibilities, while a huge mural of “Enjoy Life” adorns the wall of a candy factory.
320–430 minutes. Interactive History: “Road of the Balts” + Photography Museum
If you’re looking for a different way to explore history, visit the “Road of the Balts” Baltic Culture Center—an interactive and fun place. The center brings historical facts and unexpected, sometimes piquant, insights into the lives of our ancestors to life. During your visit, you’ll learn about what people might have done 1,000 years ago and see how the Baltic tribes lived.
Next up is the Museum of Photography. Climb up to the rooftop and admire the city views from the terrace. It’s hard to describe, but easy to recall the experience of a camera obscura, when you simply find yourself… inside a camera.
430–540 minutes. Sweet break: Ruta (and a chocolate bubble)
In Šiauliai, calories are counted differently: they become memories. Visit the Ruta Chocolate Museum – you’ll learn many interesting facts about the history of chocolate. There’s a café nearby, where enchanting aromas and a chocolate bubble await you. The most delicious treats are available at the Ruta Factory’s signature store.
540–640 minutes. A taste with character: Valerijonas and Gubernia
Choose one or both:
- Valerijonas Teahouse – an unexpected combination: healthy and delicious food, chickpea zeppelins – a taste you’ll definitely tell your friends about.
- Gubernia is the oldest brewery in the Baltics, boasting its own history and legendary kvass (we recommend arranging tastings in advance).
640–790 minutes. The grand finale by the water: the Iron Fox and a farewell to the sun at Lake Rekyva
The journey’s finale should be magnificent. First, the shores of Lake Talkša and the Iron Fox, which has made it into the Lithuanian Book of Records (a photo with it is almost mandatory). Near the lake, everyone will find a place for themselves: playgrounds and sports fields for the active, paths and benches for leisurely enjoyment.
And then – Lake Requiwa and the most beautiful sunsets. The bridge, the sand, the horizon, and the sun – everything you need for a wonderful evening. If the day has been intense, such an ending turns everything into a perfect memory.
